VEHICLE SAFETY & RESPONSIBLE USE
LAST UPDATED: [22/10/2026]
Vehicle safety & responsible use
1. Introduction
Swamp Rider vehicles are specialist amphibious all-terrain machines intended for use in demanding off-road environments.
Safe operation requires an understanding of the vehicle’s capabilities, limitations, maintenance requirements and the conditions in which it is being used.
This page provides general safety guidance and should be read alongside the manufacturer’s operating manual and any vehicle-specific instructions.
It does not replace formal operator training, a suitable risk assessment or applicable safety regulations.
2. Operator responsibilities
Vehicles should only be operated by people who are competent, suitably instructed and familiar with the relevant controls and safety procedures.
Operators should:
- Read and understand the manufacturer’s operating instructions before use.
- Familiarise themselves with the controls, steering, braking, transmission and emergency procedures.
- Inspect the vehicle before operation.
- Ensure passengers are appropriately seated and protected.
- Observe the manufacturer’s operating limits.
- Use appropriate protective and safety equipment.
- Stop operation where conditions become unsafe.
Where vehicles are used commercially, employers and operators must meet their applicable health and safety obligations.
3. Off-road operation
Swamp Rider vehicles are designed for off-road use, but terrain conditions can change rapidly.
Operators should assess ground stability, gradients, obstacles, visibility and available recovery options before entering unfamiliar terrain.
Particular care is required on steep slopes, unstable ground, deep mud, concealed obstacles and areas where traction or vehicle stability may be compromised.
Never exceed the manufacturer’s stated limits for gradients, loading, towing or other operating conditions.
4. Amphibious and water operation
Swamp Rider vehicles are designed with amphibious capabilities, subject to their specific configuration and manufacturer’s operating limits.
Water operation presents additional hazards, including:
- Currents, tides and changing water levels.
- Submerged obstacles and uncertain water depth.
- Reduced visibility and adverse weather.
- Changes in vehicle stability caused by loading or movement.
- Mechanical failure or loss of propulsion.
- Difficult or inaccessible exit points.
Before entering water, operators must assess the conditions, check the vehicle’s readiness and establish a safe route and exit plan.
Suitable personal flotation equipment should be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and the relevant risk assessment.
Amphibious capability does not mean that a vehicle is suitable for all waterways, sea conditions or weather.
Do not operate in conditions beyond the manufacturer’s specified limits.
5. Loading and passengers
The maximum permitted payload, passenger capacity and load distribution requirements must never be exceeded.
Loads should be securely restrained and positioned in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
Improper loading may affect vehicle stability, steering, braking and amphibious performance.
Passengers should follow the operator’s instructions and use any required restraints or safety equipment.
6. Maintenance and inspections
Regular maintenance is essential for safe and reliable operation.
Owners and operators should follow the manufacturer’s recommended inspection and maintenance schedules.
Particular attention should be given to:
- Steering, braking and transmission systems.
- Tracks, tyres or other running gear as applicable.
- Fluid levels and signs of leakage.
- Electrical systems and batteries.
- Hull integrity, seals and drainage arrangements.
- Safety equipment and emergency provisions.
Any suspected safety-critical defect should be investigated before further operation.
7. Modifications and accessories
Additional equipment and modifications may affect vehicle weight, balance, stability, performance and operating limitations.
Modifications should be appropriately designed, installed and assessed for their intended application.
Customers should consult Swamp Rider UK or another suitably qualified specialist before undertaking significant modifications.
Where modifications alter the manufacturer’s original specification, revised operating limits or additional safety measures may be necessary.
8. Public-road use
Unless expressly confirmed otherwise in the relevant vehicle documentation, Swamp Rider vehicles supplied by DTM-GB Ltd are intended for off-road use.
Amphibious or all-terrain capability does not establish approval for public-road operation.
Road registration, construction and use requirements, insurance, licensing and other legal obligations must be considered separately.
Customers must not operate a vehicle on public roads unless it meets all applicable legal requirements.
9. Training and familiarisation
Swamp Rider UK can discuss operator familiarisation, demonstrations and training arrangements on request.
The availability, scope and cost of any training will be confirmed separately.
Customers should ensure that operators receive instruction appropriate to the vehicle, operating environment and intended use.
10. Manuals and documentation
Manufacturer operating instructions are normally supplied with the vehicle, usually in printed form, although digital documentation may also be provided.
Customers should retain the relevant manuals and make them available to all operators.
Where information in this general guidance differs from the manufacturer’s vehicle-specific instructions, the applicable manufacturer’s safety requirements and operating limitations should be followed.
11. Recovery and emergencies
Operators should establish appropriate emergency and recovery procedures before entering challenging terrain or water.
Recovery operations can involve significant forces and additional hazards.
Recovery equipment should be suitable for the vehicle and used only by competent personnel in accordance with relevant instructions.
Operators should not attempt recovery methods that place people at unnecessary risk.
12. Responsibility and legal rights
Operators and owners are responsible for using vehicles safely and complying with applicable laws and operating requirements.
DTM-GB Ltd does not guarantee that any vehicle will be suitable for every terrain, water condition or application.
Nothing in this guidance excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Nothing in this guidance affects statutory consumer rights.
